Michael MacGarry

Michael MacGarry is a visual artist and filmmaker based in Johannesburg, South Africa. He has exhibited at an international level for more than five years including TATE Modern, Iziko South African National Gallery, Kiasma Museum, Helsinki, Vitra Museum, Weil as well as Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. His practice is focused on the ongoing ramifications of imperialism on the African continent. His recent work focused on Kilamba Kiaxi, a new city outside Luanda, Angola. The city was built by Chinese construction company CITIC and financed by Hong Kong-based China International Fund. This is the single largest capital investment project financed by a Chinese company in Africa. Mac Garry currently develops a photographic monograph titled Kilamba Kiaxi that further develops his focus on this site, as well as a planned exhibition of the photographic work and the short film with the Goethe Institut in Luanda, for 2016.
